P4: Pitch ideas to a client
Having practised presentation skills in groups and finalised all of the pre-production aspects of my presentation, I will now be pitching the idea to a client and receiving feedback, which I will document and respond to here on my blog:
Here is video documentation of the pitch itself:
I think my presentation was well presented and ended up going very well overall. Below I will be documenting and responding to the feedback that I was given.
M3: Show an understanding of feedback and be able to respond to questions
Having presented my ideas and proposal, I received a good amount of feedback. Below I have summed up the key points of this feedback and categorised it into positive feedback and constructive criticisms. This will help me see an overview of the feedback that I received so that I can analyse how my presentation and ideas succeeded and where they could use improving.
Feedback received:
Positives:
Criticisms:
Positives:
- All elements discussed in great detail
- Good presentation skills carried over from research - Open stance, good posture, projecting voice etc.
- Inclusion of social media elements such as snapchat codes, QR codes etc. linking in to established target audience
- Clear research done into audiences, market competition and production costs
- Linked in well with Client (Bauer media) as a publisher within elements such as pricing and how it would fit in with their existing collective of brands and products
Criticisms:
- Too long and too much explanation for certain points; need to keep more concise to keep audience engagement
- Lack of audience interaction
- Too much reliance on visual aid (e.g. looking at powerpoint text too much to keep on track.) This breaks eye contact with audience and also disrupts the flow of the pitch as there a breaks where I refer to the powerpoint for guidance.
- Powerpoint contains too much text and not enough visuals. This makes audiences uninterested and unengaged. Visual aid such as a powerpoint should be mostly visual. This could include more examples to display points clearly (e.g. pictures of competition magazines to display how they are cluttered.)
- More specific information on competition would give more context
- Potential development of ideas - Exclusive social media content, more interactive elements, more themes.
From this feedback I can tell that my presentation and the ideas within it were communicated effectively, as the audience giving feedback responded positively to my good presentation skills and level of detail within my presentation. The feedback also tells me that the ideas and concepts included in the presentation themselves were effective, with feedback mentioning specifically the use of social media elements to appeal to the target audience and meet the brief, as well as the inclusion of visuals such as covers and spreads. Another notable piece of feedback was that my research into both the existing marketplace and the clients products was effective, and shined through in my presentation as I spoke about similar product conventions and how I would subvert them. This also shined through near the end of my presentation where I went into detail as to why my product would fit in with the client's collective.
Most of the criticisms of my presentation came from the way that I presented. It was said that I had good presentation skills and went into great detail, but there were a few elements of the presentation that could have been improved. For example, points of the presentation could have been a lot more concise and the extra explanations and detail for certain points was unnecessary. It was also said that my visual aid to the presentation had too much text on it and not enough visual information. This meant the presentation was much less engaging than it could have been. This could have been improved with the inclusion of more visual aids to accentuate points e.g. about conventions that I plan on subverting or inspirations for the magazine.
Some more criticisms came in the form of potential developments that could be made to my ideas. These included expanding upon social media interactivity to include things such as competitions, agony aunt sections, etc. Other ideas were relating to including a wider range of themes in this magazine. These are ideas that I can consider for the development of my app idea.

D1: Discuss the client considerations for the creation of the product from the pitch
There are a few client considerations for the creation of this product to note.
One would be considering the brand image and ensuring how it would remain strong and consistent throughout all of the channels e.g. advertisements, the magazine itself, social media channels, etc. I would do, this through keeping the same font types, sizes, logos, slogans, etc throughout all of these products. In order to ensure this, It would be a good idea to have a "PR" team or social media coordinator to ensure that the branding on social platforms are consistent with the branding provided by the design team.
Another consideration would be which distribution and production channels we would use for the magazine. This means how and where we send the magazines out to be sold, and which other channels e.g. online sources we will be selling the magazine on. This is important to consider as it affects how much production/distribution costs the company, and how much budget will be needed for this. It could also affect sales, and thusly effect the profit. For production of the magazine, we would need to look into the costs and popularity of potential distribution methods.
A further client consideration for the creation of the product from the pitch would be exact costs and budget for production of this product. I included a few figures that I had calculated within my pitch for general costs, but these figures are very rough and based off of general averages of market costs. Different projects and products end up with greatly varying costs based on team size, content, production style, etc. To address this, I will need to do more planning and research in terms of what size of team I want, how much wages will be, how much the content will cost to produce, etc. This is information that the client will definitely want to consider, as it will be their investment.
I also want my magazine to feature a lot of content such as interviews, QnA sections, In depth articles featuring input from professionals, etc. In order to achieve this I will need to consider how I will be able to reach out and get in touch with key figures in order to produce this content. This means doing research into certain celebrities and key figures as well as hiring journalists and interviewers who will carry out production for this content by travelling to different locations such a festivals. I will also need to consider how to create additional exclusive content for our social media channels, such as behind the scenes videos and audio, as well as exclusive articles. This means I will need to consider what kind of a team and equipment will be needed to produce high end audio and video content for these purposes.
