P3: Create a production plan for audio-visual content using special effects
P4: Incorporate visual effect ideas into the production plan
In this unit, I will be working to create a piece of audio-visual content based on one of three brief's that we have been set.
Personally, I am using brief #2 as a guide, which is to create a music video. This will allow me a chance to be creative with my choice of shots and effects, while utilising my band and our passion for music to create a satisfying piece of content. Furthermore, it will allow me to practise and improve my editing and effects skills, whilst learning about the software and how to implement visual effects techniques.
Here is the treatment I have created for this project:

Here are some mood boards I have created for my project, showing different examples of effects I want to use and how I want them to turn look in my project:
Mood Board 1: Special Effects:
The Special effects in this mood board include explosions, coloured smoke grenades, makeup and fake blood. these are all things that I would like to utilise in my project to enhance the surreal and dark theme and atmosphere of the video. Smoke grenades and masks are things that will be particularly prominent within the project, as these are used to create a sense of depth and signify specific characters along with symbolising the meaning behind them.
Mood Board 2: Visual effects
This mood board includes some visual effects that I would like to utilise within my project. These include changing the colour/appearance of the sky in the background. This could be used to effect in my video to make the sky dark and dreary to fit with the atmosphere, as well as using it to create occasional flashes of colour in the sky creating a cool psychedelic effect. It also includes other colour changes, such as the effect on the car wheels in the bottom left. This involves masking the object and changing it's colour. I plan on doing this with instruments that the band are playing, as well as perhaps the dripping fake blood mentioned in the special effects section. other things shown within this mood board are green screen chromakey, fire effects and filters. Glowing/coloured and stylised eyes are also a visual effect that I wish to utilise in my video. I can do this by taking the eyes and changing the colour, saturation, etc. of them, and having this effect move with the eyes naturally using keyframes.
Budget/Production Cost
This production, of course, involves some level of production cost and budget to consider. I have expressed these costs and considerations into a sheet which can be seen below:

Conducting Recces
Recce 1: Cherry Hinton Chalk Pits
I went with a friend and conducted a recce at this location to decide whether it would be suitable for use in my project. After the Recce, I conclude that this is a brilliant place for me to film, as it is a large open space, so we will not be restricted in terms of space. It also has a unique and interesting appearance due to it being a natural area made of chalk and plants, with slight human influence. the space is also in the local area, so travel won't be an issue, and getting shooting permission from the local council shouldn't be too difficult. Furthermore, the big open area is perfect for setting off pyrotechnics safely.
M1: Discuss the issues and risks for the proposed multiple effects

Filming permission
- For any shots that I got whilst in the Netherhall film studio, permission was granted to me by my teachers, as use of the studio is controlled and monitored by them. As I am a student here this permission is easily accessible to me
- As for outdoor shoots, I shot at the local Cherry Hinton chalk pits, which are an open public area. therefore, filming on these premises is legal and requires no permissions. Use of the planned pyrotechnics however did require me to inform the local council and request permission from them. They responded with an email informing me that I had permission to film here so long as I provided a risk assessment for the filming and proposed effects, which I did.
Legislation covering the use of pyrotechnics
The only pyrotechnic devices I used in this project were coloured smoke grenades, produced by "Enola Gaye." These are non-toxic, cold burning pyrotechnics, meaning they are perfectly safe for use and will not cause damage to the environment or people in the area. The legislation for the use of these makes them essentially usable anywhere, as long as permission has been attained from the correct people, especially for private land. This is what "Enola Gaye" have to say about the legislation of using their pyrotechnics:
D1: Evaluate the viability of the proposed multiple effects
In this section, I will be evaluating the overall viability of my proposed idea by having someone ask me questions about the viability of the idea. The following is the video I made for this:
Time Stamps:
- 0:05 - 2:21 - The viability of the risk assessment, Will everybody be safe? What was discovered about risks during the Recce?
- 2:22 - 3:10 - The viability of the solutions to the risks, are they realistic?
- 3:12 - 5:03 - The viability of the resources, Do you have everything you need?
- 5:04 - 7:00 - The viability of the the costs involved and whether you can afford them.
- 7:00 - 9:06 - The viability of your permissions, Is it likely that you have missed something?
- 9:07 - 10:46 - The viability of the production team and whether they have the skills to carry out the shoot
- 10:51 - 12:02 - What should you be concerned about cast and crew-wise?
- 12:03 - 16:05 - The viability of whether your sequence is feasible to make look realistic? Will it be fit for broadcast?
- 16:07 - 18:10 - The viability of the aesthetics. Will it look pleasing enough? Have you really given enough thought to the aesthetics?
- 18:11 - 19:40 - Will the sound quality be okay?
- 19:40 - 21:59 - Viability of fitness for purpose? Will it meet the client brief? Will it be believable to a paying audience?
- 22:00 - 24:21 - The viability of the footage you intend to collect. Will you have everything you need?
