This unit will be focusing on audio-visual promotional content, and it's uses and purpose. Below I will be analysing similar promotional content to that outlined in the brief in order to gain a better understanding of the components of these kinds of products:
P1: Similar products research
M1: Analyse the different approaches used in the identified promos
Here I will be researching similar products within the promotional video genre and analysing various aspects such as conventions, approaches, messages, etc.
Music Promos:
Music Promos are utilised heavily in the music industry in order to bring attention to an artist or product such as an album or single. These music videos are typically either narrative or performance based, but this can vary and many artists choose to go for more abstract concept video.
|
This video is a good example of a more performance based music video. The majority of the video denotes the artist playing guitar and singing. It has elements of narrative in it with copies of him appearing behind him doing various things such as playing with a lamp, doing starjumps, etc.
The genre of this video is "indie" and "Bedroom Pop." These genres are aimed at teenage and young adult audiences of around 14-20. It appeals to the audience as the artist is quite young, and appears even younger due to his braces. a young artist is a convention of this genre. The other people that appear in the video are also young and asian, appealing to the young target audience as well as appealing to a target audience of asian music fans. |
This video is an example of a more narrative based music video. The video tells a story about the artist signing a contract and being introduced to a "Paradise" where he is given drugs and fame. The end of the video has all of the people in the video imprisoned, which connotes the message that the big rap music industry is dangerous and is imprisoning artists. Having a message behind the video is a convention of narrative based music videos.
Several conventions can be noted here. One of narrative based videos is the section at the start of the video, which gives context to the narrative before the song begins. A convention of rap videos that can be noted here is the convention of big groups of people. Most rap videos involve the artist with lots of other people in a group. This is not a conventional rap video, but that is a convention that can still be noted. |

This video is more abstract/concept based than the others. Many of the shots are distorted and involve various different close ups and shots that are difficult to put context to. Shots such as the bath scenes and close ups of blood are good examples of these.
This video demonstrates great use of special and VFX. Which is a convention of many music videos. These effects work well for music videos as they create interesting visuals to pair with the music and make the video more memorable. You can see examples of VFX in the purple lightning behind the artist, as well as the purple grainy filter over many of the shots. A good example of the special effects used here are the blood and gore makeup on the female figure within the video. |
