Big Corporations owning the news
Big Corporations like Trinity Mirror and News Corp own a large amount of the news that we are provided with today. This is because they own many different subsidiaries, producing news in various forms with a large enough budget to stomp out any competition and have their products mass-distributed and easily available to the public. This Comes with some advantages and disadvantages:
Pros:
Pros:
- Higher Quality of news due to larger budget (more editors/journalists and Better equipment)
- More Widespread news as large corporation funding allows for wider distribution
- Various forms of news to appeal to a wide range of audiences (different reading ages, classes etc.)
- Allows for lots of different variations of news delivery to prosper through different subsidiaries
- Small news companies can continue to prosper by becoming subsidiaries of these large corporations
- More restrictions on the news set by parent corporations (less free and honest than independent news)
- News is less impartial, and may be biased due to the owners opinions or what will benefit the company (especially in politics)
- Less Opportunity for independent news organisations, as the market is controlled by these organisations
- Many news stories over different mediums and subsidiaries would be the same stories, leading to a smaller variety of different stories
